Zoom Lessons: Watch for Unauthorised Join Attempts

Zoom Lessons: Watch for Unauthorised Join Attempts

Security & Devices

During online lessons, teachers noticed repeated attempts to join Zoom lessons using names that did not match any pupil on the class register, including one using a staff member's name. The teachers correctly did not admit them and reported it straight away.

Zoom security settings (waiting rooms, passcodes) are not changing, so please rely on the checks below.

Before admitting anyone from the waiting room

  • Cross-check the display name against your iSAMS register for that class. If the name doesn't match a pupil you're expecting, don't admit them.
  • If you're unsure who someone is, use the waiting room chat to ask for their full name and class. If they don't respond promptly, or the answer doesn't add up, don't admit them.
  • Remind pupils that their Zoom display name must clearly show their real full name. Blank, nickname or unrecognisable names will not be admitted.

If it happens during a lesson

Carry on with your genuine pupils, then report it to IT afterwards with as much detail as possible: the names used, the approximate time, and a screenshot if you can.
